What makes you think that part of Windows root has deleted itself? The most important thing to keep it ticking over is to ensure that Automatic Updates are turned on. To a limited extent that will "repair" Windows, as upgrades are introduced.

I can offer more assistance if I have more details of the problem. It will be very helpful if you can tell me exactly which version of Windows you are using. You can find that under Help->About in My Computer.

hello :

ty for reply.

i know part of windows root is missing cos it told me in an error messege, see, its long story. during the problem i went to either format it or restore it, but, i cldnt do wither, cos restore had been turned off which i didnt know of, and this pc has no format option, not in the systmens area of the start menu or anywhere else, and also, we have no service pack 2, we cant cos the cd we have is a copy of xp pro................pc man gave it us. said u dont need genuine until u buy new pc........whwnever we turn pc on now, i haveto be fast and select to either run xp pro or the setup of xp pro otherwise it keeps rebooting........ once iv choicne within the desigated time it loads alright......sometimes cleaners freeze....then i reboot and try again, iv defragmented it too, sometimes the windows cleaners etc freeze.

I ought to, Scotty. I've been working with computers since 1966. A lot of that was in software design and development, but along the way I've learned a great deal about the inner workings, and how to fix them when they go wrong.

That's for clarifying your position. It's going to be difficult to correct everything, because you really do need service pack 2, but we won't be able to upgrade you until we get things fixed. I can supply you with a new copy of hal.dll - that is quite a small file. I'm not running XP on this machine, so it may take me a day or two to get it to you.

The best thing would be to get you a complte new copy of XP. I can send you a CD, but that would, of course, mean that you would have to give me your address, and you may not be willing to do that.
