A friend of mine has horizontal lines on her laptop monitor. She said it started with one line on the right but has now progressed to several that go horizontally across the screen. She wants to know if this is hardware or software problem. I certainly don't know and thought I would ask here. Thanks in advance to anyone who may have an answer or suggestion!

It's very difficult to be certain on such a limited description, but I would expect that to be hardware - probably the actual monitor itself. If you could manage to get a picture (perhaps with a cell phone) I could be more confident in my reply.

Unless it is still under warranty, I'm afraid that it's likely to be way too expensive to repair that. Realistically it is a question of either putting up with the lines or replacing the complete laptop computer. Sorry I can't make a more positive suggestion!

Thank you so much!!! I've given her the info and have requested a photo of the problem but I'm in agreement with you---sounds like she needs a new laptop!!
