Smile Heads UP ! Virus Alert

Heads UP!
Virus Alert

This is not a joke, it is real, the link to snopes is at the end so you can check on this.

Any email with "Mail Server Report" in the subject line is a new mass mailing worm and should not be opened. It comes with an attachment in zip format. Apparently there is a Zip file attached so be very weary of any thing with a zip file on it.

The message tells you that a worm was detected in an e-mail that you sent out and asks you to open and install the attachment to fix the problem. Only, it ISthe problem! DO NOT DO IT!Delete the e-mail.

This is a real threat.
You can check it out at snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp

If you have Incredimail you can:

You can set up a message rule to help with this problem. Put the Mail Server Report in the subject line and tell it to delete it from the server, and this will help with the problem.

Out of habit I save all attachments, pictures, and zip files to my desktop. Then right click on them, and scan with anti virus and spyware programs. Good habit to get into. I never open a zip file without scanning first. Thanks for the Info Mike..

I checked snopes.com and this is for real..

Get this sent around to your contacts ASAP...we don't need this spreading around.

You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached filed called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it, It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch
Which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend, do not open it and shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept

OUTBREAK UPDATE:
Spam Surge Trojan.Peacomm threat level increased

Protection Update
Today Symantec Security Response raised the risk level of Trojan.Peacomm to a category 3 threat, due to the speed and volume in which it is being aggressively spammed across the Internet. The Trojan, which was first spotted January 17, 2007 has been raised to a higher category following a sustained increase in new versions of the attack which appeared over the weekend as the malware author responded to improvements in protection made by security companies by adjusting his tactics.

Trojan.Peacomm is one of a number of spamming Trojan horse programs Symantec has seen lately that appear to originate from Russia and are clearly aimed at making money for the author by pumping up penny stocks. The victim is enticed through social engineering techniques to open an attachment, which typically appears to be a video clip on a recent, newsworthy event.
The email itself will have no message body, but will have one of several subject lines such as "A killer at 11, he's free at 21 and kill again!," "Fidel Castro Dead," "Re: Your Text." For a complete list of subject lines, please click here.

Symantec’s new technology, Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response (SONAR), which is included in Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, helped to detect an increase in activity around supporting files dropped by Trojan.Peacomm early last week, before the threat was seen in the wild.
We will closely monitor further information related to this threat, and will provide updates and security content as necessary.

Next Steps?

To reduce the possibility of being affected by Trojan.Peacomm, Symantec Security Response advises users to do the following:
  • Keep antivirus and IPS detection signatures updated.
  • Never click on attachments or web links from unsolicited emails.
  • Regularly apply security patches and updates to all major software installed on the computer.
  • Use a security solution that contains antivirus and client firewall technologies, such as Symantec Client Security or Norton Internet Security, to protect against today's known and tomorrow's unknown threats.
If you are unaware of the security status of your PC, please take one of the following actions:

Most virus-checkers do NOT examine the content of zip files routinely, while scanning e-mails. Nor do they usually scan the content when performing a "normal" scan on your hard disk. Generally you need to specify a "thorough" scan and / or specify to examine the contents of "archives".

Bandit's approach is highly to be recommended for any attachment to any e-mail. There is no such thing as a "trusted" source, as the warnings quoted above testify.

If anyone reading this isn't using a virus-checker that was updated in the last 24 hours, further advice can be found at:
